Florida Whig Party Now Has 5 Announced Candidates for U.S. House

On January 7, the Florida Whig Party announced that it now has five candidates for U.S. House in 2010. The newly-announced candidates are Stephen J. Bacon in the 7th district, and Craig Porter in the 25th district. Previously announced candidates are Paul McKain in the 2nd district, John Annarumma in the 6th district, and Clayton Schock in the 20th district.  Read More

Remember the name Craig Porter. He is the answer to a future trivia question about the first candidate to qualify for federal office as a candidate for the Whig Party since 1850. Porter is running in Florida’s 25th Congressional District in western Miami-Dade, the current domain of Mario Diaz-Balart.

Florida man becomes first Whig Party candidate to run for federal office since 1800s

Ocala, Florida –  For the first time in more than 150 years, a candidate is running for federal office under the Whig Party.

On Thursday, Craig Porter of Miami became qualified to run for Congress’ 25th District in South Florida as a member of the Florida Whig Party.

The Whig Party was once one of the two major political parties of the United States, from 1833 to 1856.  Two U.S. presidents were elected from the Whig Party, William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor. Both died in office, and were succeeded by John Tyler and Millard Fillmore.  Fillmore was the last Whig to hold the nation’s highest office. The Florida Whig Party is a more recent creation, having formed in 2006.  Read More
